has glossdeu: Ein writ (lateinisch: breve) war im Mittelalter in England das Schreiben eines geistlichen oder weltlichen Fürsten, durch das dem Adressaten eine bestimmte Nachricht überbracht wurde. In der englischen Rechtsgeschichte war dies ein Befehl des Königs, mit dem er unter Kennzeichnung des Streitgegenstandes, den zuständigen Justizbeamten anwies, den Beklagten vor Gericht zu laden und mit den Parteien zu verhandeln. Nach und nach bildeten sich feststehende "writs" heraus; bereits im 12. Jahrhundert gab es 75 an der Zahl. Diese wurden alsbald in halbamtlichen Verzeichnissen als "Registers of Writs" zusammengefasst.
