This uncommon species is recognizable by its spoon-shaped fruiting bodies that may reach up to tall, with dark brown outer surfaces and orange to pinkish to reddish-brown inner surfaces. The fruiting bodies are clustered together, growing from large underground masses on compacted mycelia known as sclerotia. In eastern North America, it is typically found growing underneath hardwood trees; it has also been collected from Costa Rica, India, Mexico, and Japan.
