On le retrouve aussi bien dans l'architecture urbaine bourgeoise (le pignon en gradins ou le pignon à échelons est caractéristique par exemple des « pignons flamands »), comme dans des constructions rurales les plus modestes. Dans certaines régions de France, il porte le nom de « pas de moineau ».
