Information
has glosseng: Steptoe & Johnson LLP is a Washington, D.C.-based law firm with over 450 attorneys working out of eight offices around the world. It was founded in 1913 in West Virginia. It should not be confused with Steptoe & Johnson PLLC, a West Virginia-based regional firm that is also descended from the same law practice founded by Philip Steptoe and Louis A. Johnson. The firm previously operated offices in Moscow and Almaty but decided to wind down those operations in 1999 and handed over that practice to Squire, Sanders & Dempsey. The following year the firm merged with London-based telecoms specialist Rakisons, a City firm of some 16 partners and 30 associates. After the merger, and with the downturn in the telecoms sector, many legacy Rakisons partners decamped to other firms such as Salans, Altheimer & Gray, and Marriott Harrison. Steptoe grew again in 2004 by acquiring the seven person Brussels practice of disbanding firm Oppenheimer Wolff & Donnelly, adding to its Belgian office in place since 2002. A New York office followed in 2005 focused on white collar defense. Steptoe subsequently has opened offices in Century City and Chicago.
