Sie entstand zeitgleich zur Erfindung des Buchdrucks mit beweglichen Lettern durch Johannes Gutenberg und war vom 17. Jahrhundert bis 1945 ein Prunkstück der herzoglichen Bibliothek in Gotha. Heute befindet sie sich in der Library of Congress in Washington D.C.
