Metoden tar utgangspunkt i forestillingen om at ulike språklige uttrykk tilhører ulike typer diskurser. Den brukes for å kunne analysere typiske egenskaper ved en tekst, vanligvis dens tradisjonelle form eller struktur, for å kunne forstå teksten ut i fra dens sosiologiske sammenheng. De mest kjente teologer som har utviklet og benyttet formkritikk i sine tekstanalyser er: Hermann Gunkel, Martin Dibelius, Wilhelm Bousset, Sigmund Mowinckel og Rudolf Bultmann.
